Introduction - Online Freelancing Overview, Options, Opportunities and Challenges

If you’re interested in becoming a freelancer, there’s never been a better time to give it a try. But what is online freelancing really about? What are its pros and cons, and how do you know if it makes sense for you personally? How do you undertake this endeavor in a way that will maximize your chances of success? Well, that’s what the Online Freelancing Guide is all about—answering these questions and many more. And there’s no better place to start than this introductory chapter, where I’ll help you decide not just if online freelancing is the right option for you, but also what kind of online freelancer you want to be.

The first section of this chapter is a high-level introduction that describes what online freelancing is about, and shows you how it compares to other forms of employment. I then take a more detailed look at which work disciplines apply best to online freelancing, and discuss the important matter of the value proposition: what you offer a potential client. The third section discusses the important psychological issues associated with online freelancing, while the fourth contrasts several different online freelancing career options, ranging from sideline business to full-time work. Finally, I look at important choices and trade-offs that freelancers have to make, such as what types of projects to go after, and how generalized or specialized they should be in their work.

Note that many of the concepts and topics that are introduced in this chapter will be fleshed out in further detail in later chapters. I have attempted to provide links where appropriate, and more will be included as chapters are added to the Online Freelancing Guide.
